Size: 79x79x92.5 cm
Designer and Creator: Gastone Buttarini
Collaborators: Graziella Barozzi, Andrea Buttarini

The Arch of Septimius Severus is situated at Leptis Magna in Libya and is one of the most famous monuments in the whole archaeological area. It was built in 203 A.D. for the visit of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus to his native city. What we see today is the result of the anastylosis-restoration by several archaeologists, which started in 1964 and ended in 2004, and in which the restorer Gastone Buttarini also took part. The model representing it was created exclusively with polyester resin. The various parts were sculpted by hand using different materials, such as wood, plaster and clay. All the elements comprising the Arch were subsequently cast using silicone moulds. The model is in the Jamāhīriyya Museum, in Tripoli Castle, whereas a second copy is housed in the Museum of Roman Civilisation in Rome.
